Local History

Founded in 1802, Newark's rich history is rooted in business and industry. Rich in resources such as silica, iron, oil and glass brought many to Newark to establish companies such as Holophane, Heisey and Owens Corning Fiberglass. Many early companies continue to offer employment to our residents. Newark, Licking County's seat of government, stands proud with its classic courthouse and preserved Midwestern architecture. The town square offers unique shopping from small family run businesses that go back generations.

The courthouse was built in 1876 and is regarded as one of the finest Second Empire-style courthouses in Ohio. Also found on the square is one of two Ohio buildings designed by famous architect, Louis Sullivan. Newark is small town America. This community is rooted in rural traditions and a strong work ethic.
