Downtown Utility Burial Project

Downtown Newark still has many overhead electric and communication lines. These lines pose a significant health and safety hazard through the risk of fire, shock, or arc to area residents and businesses. Therefore, the City, in cooperation with AEP, has contracted with Claypool Electric to bury the lines underground in a manner consistent with current safety and building codes.

Underground infrastructure construction is complete.

Production of the final transformer needed to complete the project has been delayed. The Contractor and AEP will continue working to transfer power in the remaining section when the transformer is received, likely spring/summer 2024.

The poles will be removed once communications lines have been relocated.
